Letter from Rav Mordechai Shulman, Rosh Yeshivah of Slabodka. Slabodka, 1939

Our situation is difficult, but with tremendous compassion from heaven, we see God’s Providence every step of the way.” Letter written and signed by Rav Mordechai Shulman, Rosh Yeshivah of Slabodka, on the stationery of his father-in-law, Rav Isaac Sher.

The letter indicates that it was sent to Vilna [to his friend Rav Yosef Shub, Rav Chaim Ozer’s secretary] in 1939. It mentions that he heard that the slaughtering tax would be transferred to the community, an event that transpired when the Soviet army captured Lithuania.

Rav Mordechai Shulman, Rosh Yeshiva of Slabodka (1901-1982) was one of the prominent mussar figures of the last generation. He was the son-in-law of Rav Issac Sher, who was the son-in-law of the Alter of Slabodka and his successor as Rosh Yeshivah. In his youth, he studied Torah by the leading Lithuanian sages before the Holocaust and merited close relationships with the Chofetz Chaim and the Alter of Slabodka. He learned “chavrusa” with Rav Chaim Ozer Grodzinski, Rav Elchonon Wasserman and the Chazon Ish.
