Torah Giants. Lengthy, interesting teshuvah from Rabbi Wolf Hamburger, av”d Furth. Interesting teshuvah regarding the words of the Ibn Ezra in his Sifas Yeser regarding the bris bein habesarim, by the noted Rabbi Wolf of Hamburg, av”d Furth. Rabbi Avraham Binyamin Wolf Hamburg ( 1770-1850) authored the Sha'ar Zikeinim and Simlas Binyamin. He was a prominent marbitz Torah in Ashkenaz in his time and was at the forefront of the battle against the Reform and maskilim in Germany. In his eulogy for Rav Wolf, the Ksav Sofer said, ”The great gaon, Sinai v'oker harim…he was rosh yeshivah for many years in Furth and was a genius of the generation and a great tzaddik, who stood at the breach opposing the destroyers. He was moser nefesh for Torah. He fulfilled u'vichol nafshicha u'vichol miodecha -  even if takes your nefesh and money.” (Drashos Ksav Sofer) Sent to his beloved talmid, Rabbi Gavriel Hirsch Lipman, later av”d Kissingen. Rav Gavriel was an expert in the Torah of the Ibn Ezra and even published his works, the Safah Berurah, Sefer Tzachot and Sefer Hashem with his comments and elucidations. (Refer to HaYeshivah HaRamah B'Fiordah, section 3, p. 187 and 389 for more information about his relationship with his rebbe.) The teshuvah in front of us was copied by a talmid, in a nice organized hand with marginal and interlinear supplements in the hand of Rabbi Wolf Hamburger. 4 pages, 23x24 cm. Tears with loss at the top of the pages, light tears in the fold.
