Sephardic Rabbanim. Interesting letter from Rabbi Refael Arazi Hakohen regarding a will discussed by many Torah leaders . 1833. Letter written by Rabbi Refael Arazi, prominent Tiveria sage, regarding a will that all prominent Sephardic sages discussed. Rabbi Refael Arazi Hakohen (1791-1869) was born in Damascus. He moved to Tiveria in 1809 and was one of its prominent rabbis. In 1832, he left on a fundraising mission to Morocco. He signed with the Tiveria rabbanim on letters and approbations and is mentioned with great respect in the works of the Torah sages of his generations. His responsa and works were never printed. In this letter, he mentions that he received a psak din from the rabbis of Jerusalem, headed by the Rishon Lezion, Rabbi Chaim Nissim Abulafia. He also writes that he received a letter that Rabbi Asher Kubo, av”d Salonica, was going to publicize a ruling on the matter. He also received a letter from the great rabbi of Izmir [Rabbi Chaim Palagi] and he notes that the psak din of the rabbis of Constantinople, Aleppo and Tunisia were going to be publicized. When all these rulings were collected they would be printed in a book. This letter possibly refers to the polemic regarding the bequest of the wealthy Rabbi Chaim Parchi who was murdered per the instructions of the pasha in 1920.
