The Chazon Ish and his talmidim. Personal copy of Rabbi Michel Yehudah Lefkowitz, from his Childhood in Volozhin! “This book belongs to the youth, Michel Yehudah Lefkowitz of Volozhin, 16 Smorgin Street.” Two books bound together: Dvrei Eliyahu – compilations from the Torah of the Gra – Vilna, 1910. Etz Pri – Encouragement for Torah studiers by Rabbi Yisroel Salant and Rabbi Yitzchak Elchonon of Kovno – Vilna, 1881. Copy of Rabbi Michel Yehuda Lefkowitz: The title pages of both books bear interesting autographs from Rabbi Michel Yehudah Lefkowitz; particularly his owner notation on the last page of the Dvrei Eliyahu. “This book belongs to the youth, Michel Yehudah Lefkowitz of Volozhin, 16 Smorgin Street.” The endpaper bears another notation that he wrote after moving to Eretz Israel: From the library of Michel Yehudah Lefkowitz, Zichron Meir, Tammaz, 1947. Rabbi Michel Yehudah Lefkowitz (1914-2011) was born in Volozhin. He moved to Eretz Israel in 1936. He served as Rosh Yeshivah in Ponevezh L’Tzeirim from when it was established and lectured there for almost sixty years. He taught thousands of students, was a member of the Moetzet Gedolei HaTorah and a leader of Charedi Jewry in Eretz Israel. After his marriage to the daughter of Rabbi Binyamin Gershonowitz (the Chazon Ish was his shadchan and walked him down to the chuppah), he started serving as Rebbe in Yeshivah Tiferes Tzion. One of his students was Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky zt”l, who went out of his way to show respect to him. He was a role model who combined Torah greatness and genius with the mussar of Slobodka-Chevron, where he had learned.
