Valck - Map of the World - This fantastic map is Gerard Valck's Mappe-Monde Geo-Hydrographique or Geo-Hydrographic Map of the World . It was published in 1686 by the author in Amsterdam. This map was influenced by a number of maps, including Jaillot's world map, and draws from Sanson's projection of California as an island. The map includes four corner scenes of the seasons, representing the harvests of each season. Gerard Valck (1652-1726) was a Dutch engraver and cartographer. He was the student of Abraham Blooteling, and later became his assistant. He worked for a few years with Blooteling in London before returning to Amsterdam to begin his work on maps. In 1680, he entered into partnership with Peter Schenck, with whom he operating a publishing business.
