It was published in 1850 in Mainz, by Joseph Scholz. The book is bound in publisher's board with a board with the front cover text pasted on top. There are 20 originally hand-colored lithographs. Images from this set depict historical and modern situations in which Christian missionaries might have found themselves living in or viewing, and the kind of people that they were attempting to convert to Christianity. The plates were meant to be shocking, as they provided exigence for Christian missionary activity and evidence for the perceived goodness of that activity. Joseph Scholz (1768-1813) was a German publisher. After his death, his son Christian took over the enterprise and moved the company to publish moral recitation books for children.
