Keating's Narrative of an Expedition to the Source of St. Peter's River - Two Volumes with 8 Engravings (including large fold out map) - This two volume work is William H. Keating's Narrative of an Expedition to the Source of St. Peter's River, Lake Winnepeek, Lake of the Woods, &c. Performed in the Year 1823 . This is the first English (British) edition published in London in 1825 by George B. Whittaker. The two volumes are bound in full brown calf with red spine labels with gold gilt lettering. The work includes 1 large folding map and 7 engravings. There is also a sheet of music score, ”Dog Dance of the Sioux.” The work details the US Miliary expedition of 1823 by Major Stephen H. Long. He was tasted to explore the upper Mississippi River, Minnesota River (then Saint Peter's River), to the Lake of the Woods. It is a fascinating detailing of the area's geography, geology, and customs of the Sioux and Chippewa Tribes.
