Cheever's ..Island World of the Pacific (Hawaii, Sandwich Islands) - Volume with 19 Wood Engravings (including 2 maps) - This first edition volume with map and 19 wood engravings is Henry Theodore Cheever's The Island World of the Pacific: Being the Personal Narrative and Results of Travel Through the Sandwich or Hawaiian Islands, and Other Parts of Polynesia . The work was published in New York in 1851 by Harper & Brothers. The volume features two maps (one folding) + 17 engraved plates and title page vignette (19 engravings in total). It is bound in blind-stamped black cloth boards, gilt vignette of volcanic peak, lettered in gilt. There are 406 pages with some advertisements at the end. This is a scarce and important account of Hawaii from the American Congregational Minister, Henry T. Cheever (1814-1897). It includes accounts of the culture, flora and fauna, volcanoes, the death of Captain Cook, and missionary work.
