Dumont's Voyage au Pole Sud - Volume with 66 Botany Engravings - This volume with 66 folio botany engravings is Jules Sebastien Cesar Dumont D'Urville's Voyage au Pole Sud et dan l'Oceanie sur les corvettes l'Astrolabe et la Zelee... The work was published in Paris by Gide et Cie in 1852. The volume is bound in modern green half-leather bindings with gilt-stamped spine titles and some gilt decoration on the spines. It includes 66 engravings on botany subjects, 20 of which feature original hand-coloring. Original part title, two title pages, and table of contents included (without the two volumes of text). Jules Sebastien Cesar Dumont D'Urville (1790-1842) was a French explorer and naval officer. For thirty-eight months he explored the south and western Pacific, Australia, New Zealand, and Antarctica. Several seaweeds, plants, and shrubs are named after him, as well as D'Urville Island. Dumont D'Urville proposed continued exploration in the Pacific in 1837 after the success of Weddell & Wilkes's expeditions. His instructions were to explore the Antarctic and claim the South magnetic pole. They were blocked by ice in 1838 and discovered Adelie land on their second attempt in 1840. Dumont D'Urville's expeditions reached Marquesas, Tahiti, Samoa, Tonga, Guam, Fiji, New Guinea, Borneo, New Zealand, and Tasmania.
