Seyfried, pub. 1694 - Molten Interior of the Earth Showing Water Bodies as Connected - This fascinating engraving is from Johann Heinrich Seyfried's Medulla Mirabilium naturae or Exquisite... Wonders, of the creation of nature, celestial firmaments, stars, planets, and comets... As well as, many animals, trees, fruits, and plants, in Europe, Asia, Africa, and America . This is from the second edition of the work which was published in Nuremberg by J. Hofmann in 1694. ”Extremely versatile and interesting work. In addition to a large map of the world, the coppers bring strange animals, plants, minerals” (Ackermann I, 258) The work illustrated numerous cabinet of curiosity objects as well as demons and dragons. Seyfried referenced the writings of Barlaeus, Boyle, Dapper, Guericke, Kircher, Lubienicki, Olearius, Schott, and many others. The work incorporated both folk lore and current scientific discoveries, characteristic of works during the German Baroque period.
