Dobson - Map of the West Indies with part of Florida
This detailed engraving is from Thomas Dobson's Encyclopaedia; or, A Dictionary of Arts, Sciences, and Miscellaneous Literature ... Compiled from the Writings of the Best Authors, in Several Languages. The work was published by Thomas Dobson in Philadelphia between 1790 and 1798.

It was a monumental work and the first encyclopeida printed in America. It was the largest publishing venture of the Federal Era. The work addressed botanical, scientific, military, and medical subjects. It was an expanded edition of the third edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica addressing more American topics and re-engraved plates. The plates were "the finest group of American engravings of the century" signifying the "coming of age of American book illustration." (Wroth, Colonial Printer, pp. 291-295) Artists that contributed to the work included Robert Scot, James Trenchard, James Thackara, and John Vallance.

Paper Size ~ 16" by 9 1/4" (Fold Out)

The work is in very good to excellent condition overall. There may be some faint offset to engravings from this work due to the fold out nature of the plate. There may be a few minor imperfections to be expected with age. Please review the image carefully for condition and contact us with any questions.
