Limited Edition #266/1000. - A multi-volume set of the collected works of Théophile Gautier, published by The Jenson Society in 1901. The books are presented in a three-quarter brown leather binding with marbled paper-covered boards and matching marbled endpapers. Each volume features a spine with five raised bands, ornate gilt-decorated compartments, and gilt lettering for titles and volume numbers. The top edges of the text blocks are gilt. The title page of the displayed volume states the collection was originally published in twenty-four volumes and is LIMITED TO ONE THOUSAND REGISTERED SETS, OF WHICH THIS IS NUMBER 266, with the number handwritten in red ink. The copyright page identifies the publisher as GEORGE D. SPROUL and the printer as UNIVERSITY PRESS, JOHN WILSON AND SON, CAMBRIDGE, U.S.A. Individual titles visible on the spines include Travels in Spain, Travels in Russia, Spirite, Romance of a Mummy, The Louvre, Fortunio, Portraits of the Day, and Constantinople. The base of each spine is stamped THE JENSON SOCIETY.
