Spelter Sculpture of Sappho for Susse Freres - A nineteenth-century Neoclassical cast spelter sculpture depicting the Greek poet Sappho after the model by James Pradier. The figure is depicted in a pensive, seated pose, draped in classical attire with her head resting in her hand, leaning against a lyre. The sculpture is finished in a dark, matte black patina.The sculpture is a hollow casting with an integral rocky base. Where the material has broken away at the base, the underlying silvery-gray white metal alloy is visible. The piece is missing the separate wooden or marble plinth it was originally designed to be mounted upon. There s a stable crack sable in the base of the sculpture shown in several of the photographs.
