Charitable publication to help Jews who suffered from crop failures in 1899 and 1900 that occurred in the Kherson and Bessarabia provinces of the Russian Empire. Jews were the least protected under these conditions, since they were not covered by government subsidies. The best part of Russian society responded to this misfortune. The publication includes literary works and scientific works of both famous writers and scientists, as well as young ones who managed to show their talent. The book has a truly outstanding authorship. Writers and poets were represented by K. Balmont, Prince. V. Baryatinsky, V. Veresaev, N. Garin, M. Gorky, E. Zola, V. Korolenko, S. Ya. Nadson, publicist and public figure P. Obninsky, T. Shchepkina-Kupernik. Among the scientists were professors who had all-Russian and sometimes world fame: V. Buzeskul, V. Gerye, I. Sechenov, Vl. Solovyov, P. Struve, K. Timiryazev, A. Chuprov; Georg Brandes, J. Darmester, Max Nordau, as well as private associate professors A. Kiesewetter, M. Tugan-Baranovsky, S. Shambinago and others. Autographs of A. I. Herzen and I. S. Turgenev were presented for publication by A. I. Urusov. Drawings for the publication by L.O. Pasternak, V. Serov, I. Levitan, I. Repin, V. Polenov and others. With minor exceptions, articles and drawings appear in print for the first time.
Publishers called on the state to radically change its policy towards Jews; for the first time, the guilt of Christians towards the Jewish population was openly admitted.
The collection contributed to the development of compassion, religious tolerance in general, and tolerance towards Jews in particular, fought against anti-Semitism, a number of essays and articles in it were aimed at debunking anti-Jewish myths and stereotypes that existed in the mass consciousness. Themes of Jewishness and Judaism, inequality, and the humiliated position of Jews in Russian society were present in the collection along with other pressing social, literary and scientific issues.
One of the goals of the publication was to interest the widest possible range of readers, so the range of problems and subjects touched upon in the book is extremely wide. Here are just a few article titles: “The Talmud and the latest polemical literature about it in Austria and Germany” (Vl. Solovyov), “Creativity of nature and creativity of man” (K. Timiryazev), “Sick writers and pathological creativity” (N. Bazhenov) , “On the literary and social history of the peasant question” (P. Struve), “Participation of the senses in the work of the hands of the sighted and the blind” (I. Sechenov), “On the issue of legislative regulation of home industry” (S. Bulgakov), “ From the history of religious tolerance" (V. Guerrier), "Traces of the direct influence of Jews that affected the monuments of ancient Russian writing" (S. Shambinago), "Notes on the initial accumulation in the image of Marx" (A. Savin).
The collection was a significant success among readers, as evidenced by the fact that its second edition, supplemented by a number of new publications, was published already in 1903.
The text of the book was printed in St. Petersburg, the drawings and cover were printed in Moscow in the printing house of A.I. Mamontova. Clichés were performed by Scherer and Nabholz, Fischer in Moscow and Zeeman in Leipzig.
