Natan Gross (born November 16, 1919 in Kraków, died October 5, 2005 in Tel Aviv[1]) - Polish-Israeli screenwriter, director, producer, critic and film historian, poet, writer, translator, editor and publisher publishing in Polish and Hebrew.
He was born in Krakow in a Jewish family. In 1938, he passed his final exams at the Hebrew Gymnasium in Kraków. In 1938 he began studying law at the Faculty of Law of the Jagiellonian University. During the occupation, he stayed in the vicinity of Krakow, then in the Krakow ghetto, and finally - as Franciszek Grymek, a shoemaker's journeyman - he was hiding on Aryan documents in Warsaw. He spent the last days of the occupation with his brother in Otwock. He described the period of war in his book published in 1986 in Hebrew entitled Mi ata adon Grymek (the Polish edition was published in 1991 by Wydawnictwo Literackie from Kraków under the title Kim pan jest, Pana Grymek?)[2].
Post-war years in Poland
After the war, he returned to Krakow, where he collaborated with the Jewish Historical Commission, was active in the "Gordonia" organization, and was also engaged in translating Hebrew poetry.

However, his attention was primarily absorbed by film matters. In 1946, he completed the Film Training Course in Krakow, where he had the opportunity to meet excellent lecturers, including with Antoni Bohdziewicz, Stefan Szuman and Roman Ingarden. In the same year, he was delegated to Łódź as an assistant to Stanisław Wohl on the film Two Hours (in the credits, he appears under the pseudonym F. Grymek). After the perturbations related to this film (due to accusations of formalism, the film was waiting for its premiere until 1957), Gross hesitated whether to pursue cinematography further. It was then that he met Saul Goskind, a producer of films in Yiddish, who offered Gross the position of screenwriter and director at his newly opened Kinor studio. In Łódź, he also worked as the editor of the youth magazine "Słowo Młodych" and collaborated with other magazines: "Nasz Słowa", "Opinia", "Mostami". In the latter, he published his first translations of Hebrew and Yiddish poetry into Polish, as well as his first theatrical, film and literary reviews[3].
Professional work in Israel
Due to the political situation in the country, on January 11, 1950, he left for Israel. There he lived in Ra'ananna for the first six months. After a month of stay, he was already making his first films, mainly documentaries. In cooperation with Goskind, he founded the Kolon film cooperative, and was the editor of the film newsreel Chadaszot Kolon: Geva (later Chadaszot Geva). In total, he made about 100 documentaries, including for Histadrut (30 films), National Film Service (14 films), Military Film Unit (8 films) or for Nehora[4]. In 1963, he made his only full-length feature film, Piwnica, which received two awards at the 13th Berlin International Film Festival. He was a member of the committee awarding the title of Righteous Among the Nations at Yad Vashem[5].
He died at the age of 85 in Tel Aviv and was buried there. His son Ya'akov (Jakub) is one of the most outstanding Israeli directors making films based on archival materials. The personal and literary archive of Natan Gross is located in the Emigration Archive in the University Library in Toruń.
