Orshansky Lev Grigorievich (1866-1937) – psychologist, psychiatrist, collector, one of the first Russian toy experts, a specialist in the field of pedagogical anthropology. He graduated from the University of St. George, medical faculty of the University of Berlin. In 1894 he received the degree of doctor of medicine. After moving to St. Petersburg, he enrolled as an Intern in the hospital of St. Nicholas, later, in 1897, – in the Second psychiatric, where he was entrusted with the most complex investigative Department. Then he worked in a psychiatric hospital at the Unit in St. Petersburg, where he served for three years, and was in charge of a private hospital of Dr. Stein, lectured at national universities, as well as at the Psychoneurological Institute. He organized the First auxiliary school for ”defective” children, was a consultant at the special court for minors. In 1912 he moved to the hospital of Dr. Kanasevich, reorganized after the revolution in the Diagnostic Institute, where Orshansky continued to work as head. After the revolution, the head of the Central quarantine point (children's distributor); Professor of the Leningrad Institute of Pedology and defectology; teacher of forensic courses at the Institute of advanced medical training; organizer and head of the scientific part of the criminological Cabinet at the Leningrad regional court; full member of the state Institute for the study of crime and the criminal under the NKVD; consultant psychiatrist in places of detention. He also worked at the Pedagogical Institute of social education of normal and defective child as head of the Department of anthropology. In addition, he was engaged in the collection and study of children's books and folk toys. He was one of the first Russian authors of works on toys and children's drawings. The collection of Orshansky's children's book was later included in the collection of the Russian state library.
