Very Important ”Triple Virgin” Saint Anne with Virgin and Child, Malines Belgian school, 16th century - This exceptional set of sculptures stands out for the sweetness and harmony in the faces of Saint Anne, the Virgin Mary and the Child, which show us one of the best representations of the technical and artistic achievements of the craftsmen of Mechelen during the Renaissance. The harmony of the ensemble focuses the viewer's attention on the Holy Child supported by the crowned Mother of God, who, in turn, holds a little bird in her hand, a symbol of her role as protector of humanity, as fragile as the body of the birds. Next to her, Santa Ana, who holds a basket of summer fruits at the same height as the Child of God, a symbol of ”the expiration of all things” and the transience of earthly life. 45.5 x 13 x 20.5cm. In carved, polychrome and gilt wood. Condition: slight color loss, small loss in the toes of the baby Jesus. Provenance: property of an important European private collection.
