The Wedding at Cana, Frans Fracken II, Flemish school, 17th century
Oil on copper. Copper measures: 51.5 x 66 cm, framed measures: 81 x 96 cm. Frans Fracken II or 'The Younger' (Antwerp, 1581-1642). Flemish painter born in Antwerp, son of Frans Francken I and nephew of Hieronymus Francken. In 1605 he entered the Guild of Painters of San Lucas in his hometown, beginning a career that would last until 1640 in which he specialized as a painter of cabinet works. Very important is his contribution to the genre of gallery paintings, which would influence artists like Teniers. His work stems from that of Jan Brueghel the Elder, although it also has obvious influences from his predecessors in the Francken family. The debts of his earliest productions with mannerism and sixteenth-century painting can be seen both in the structure of his compositions, and in the rhythm and expression of his figures. In addition, these include obvious allusions to the work of Italian artists such as Raphael, Veronese or Zuccaro. Origin: important Andalusian family collection
