Late 19th-Century Hayward Hand Glass Fire Grenade - Item/Description: Antique glass fire grenade, artifact of early American fire safety produced by the renowned S.F. Hayward Company of New York. Molded in a distinct light green glass hue, the globular body features an intricate, quilted diamond pattern designed to ensure a secure grip during an emergency. Shoulder displays crisp raised lettering reading: HAYWARD'S HAND FIRE GRENADE. Underside features a concentric base marked with the authentic: DESIGN PTD registration stamp. Popularized between the 1870s and early 1900s, glass fire grenades were decorative yet functional safety devices kept in Victorian homes, hotels, and offices. In the event of a fire, the user would hurl the chemical-filled glass bulb directly at the base of the flames, causing it to shatter and release fire-suppressing agents.
