William Yazzie Navajo Thunderbird Sterling Buckle - Item/Description: Fantastic hand-wrought pictograph belt buckle by renowned Native American Navajo artisan silversmith, Willie Yazzie (1929-1999). Oval shaped, slightly domed, and forged in Sterling Silver. Anodized carvings of phoenix bird, encircled by a sunlike frame. Hinged belt buckle mechanism faces a fixed soldered curved hook. Hallmarked with Yazzie's iconic gourd dipper stamp. (Southwestern Sterling Belt Buckle) Willie Yazzie was born in 1928 in Chinle, Arizona. He learned silverwork at Dean Kirk's trading post in Manuelito, New Mexico in the early 1950's. In1960, he created his iconic hallmark of a gourd dipper. His work incorporated traditional Navajo designs including animal figures such as roadrunners, thunderbirds, or Navajo deities such as Yeis, Father Sky.
