Bidspirit auction | Simplicio Sterling Turquoise Coral Watch

Simplicio Sterling Turquoise Coral Watch Cuff - Item/Description: Fabulous signed watch cuff bracelet by renowned Zuni Pueblo silversmith, Dan Simplicio (1917-1969). Hand-crafted from a thick band of Sterling Silver. Set with six glossy polished turquoise and red coral cabochon nugget stones. Bezel set into sawtooth settings. Added exquisite details include traditional motifs of applied feathers, balls, engravings and a pair of lovely raised seashells which face each other across a blank section of the band. These seashells act as bookends and are ready for insertion of a watch, to be held in place between them under tension. Hallmarked: Simplico Sterling. Dan Simplicio is considered the father of the Zuni renaissance. He learned the art of jewelry making from his uncle, Juan DeDios, one of the earliest Zuni silversmiths. Simplicio worked at C.G. Wallace’s trading post and collaborated with famed Zuni artists including Leekya Deyuse, Teddie Weahkee, Leo Poblano, Bernard Homer and Lee Edakkie. Simplico was one of the first known artists to begin incorporating natural red coral branches and rough-cut coral nuggets into his jewelry. His signature work includes delicate leaf motifs with intricate stamps and carving which contrast beautifully with heavy turquoise and coral designs.
