Francesco Bartolozzi (1727-1815) was an Italian engraver who lived in London for almost 40 years and, as his signing indicates, was both a member of the Royal Academy and the favorite engraver of King George III. We believe the subject in the painting to be Sir Nicholas Poyntz (1510-1556) a prominent English courtier during the latter part of Henry VIII's reign. He was close to the King and a prominent member of society. In 1539 and 1545 he served as High Sheriff of Gloucestershire and in 1547 represented Gloucestershire in Parliament as a Knight of the Shire. There have been several.
