Margery Ryerson, Mother & Child Etching - Item/Description: Mother and child colored etching / dry point. Signed lower left: M.R. / lower right M. Ryerson. Margery Ryerson (American, 1887-1989) Born in Morristown, New Jersey in 1886, Ryerson received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in English from Vassar College in 1909. Studied at the Cape School of Art in Provincetown MA and the Art Students League in New York. Noted for her portraits of children. From1920-1940 Ryerson taught art in New York settlement houses in exchange for the privilege of painting and drawing the children in their care. Her work during this period was considered by many to be the finest of her career. Her paintings and fine prints depicting children of the underclass and immigrants were done with integrity, respect and sensitivity, finding universal appeal and demand. These images have been used by The United Nations Children’s Fund on greeting cards and stamps. Material: Print framed under glass. Dimensions: Image size: Height: 10”; Width: 7”.
