John Tenniel Alice in Wonderland Pencil Drawing - Item/Description: Original illustration tracing by John Tenniel (1820-1914). Signed (Initialed signature / monogram) lower right. Original pencil tracing of the illustration, which appears on page 113 in Chapter 8, of the first edition of Alice in Wonderland. (Playing cards). Illustration of ”Two, Five, Seven - Painting the Rosebush”. Original tracing for woodblock of drawing. The drawing being offered is a mirror image of the final book illustration. These preliminary sketches were first drawn in pencil, then in pen and ink. As a third step, Tenniel transferred the outline of the drawings to woodblocks, using tracing paper. These woodblocks would then be engraved by the Dalziel brothers. Woodblocks were used as stamps, so the images needed to be reversed to produce the correct results in print. It is known that Tenniel transferred his drawings to the block himself using tracing paper. Chapter VIII: The Queens Croquet-Ground. A large rose-tree stood near the entrance of the garden: the roses growing on it were white, but there were three gardeners at it, busily painting them red.
