Its five-story pagoda is the National Treasure of Japan. The temple ground has hundreds of cherry trees. Benji Asada (1899-1984) was a painter and printmaker from Kyoto. Named Nakanishi Benji at birth, he took the surname Asada in 1927 in honor of two artists of that name whom he admired: one a Japanese-style painter and the other Western-style.
