Kwele Style Mask - West Africa - Item/Description: Decorative, dramatic and large hand carved Kwele mask. Characteristically heart shaped and two-tone, these masks depict human features and animal features such as antelopes (with downward pointing horns), male gorillas and even mythical animals. Typically painted two-tone: brown and white (kaolin): the white representing the spirit world (peace and tranquility); the brown the spirits of the forest and bush. The masks act as intermediaries between the two worlds. Kwele masks are not worn in ceremonies and are instead shown to the spectators.
