Signed Giambologna and marked: Vincenzo Salomone Foundry / Crafted in Naples Italy. Features a nice brown patina. Mounted to bronze base. Mount stamped ”VS”. Bust of a man in warriors helmet adorned with centaurs, warriors and phoenixes. (Greek Mythological Warrior Ajax the Great, Grand Tour Bronze) Giambologna (1529 - 1608) (Jean de Boulogne / Giovanni da Bologna) was a Flemish sculptor based in Italy, celebrated for his marble and bronze statuary in a late Renaissance or Mannerist style. In Greek mythology, Menelaus was a king of Mycenaean (pre-Dorian) Sparta. According to the Iliad, Menelaus was a central figure in the Trojan War, leading the Spartan contingent of the Greek army, under his elder brother Agamemnon, king of Mycenae. Prominent in both the Iliad and Odyssey.
