Two Carved Wood Wayang Marionettes / Puppets - Item/Description: Pair of wooden Wayang Golek puppets. Wayang golek is one of the traditional Sundanese puppet arts from West Java, Indonesia. Each dressed and adorned with fringe and decoration. Carved and painted articulated arms controlled by wooden sticks, Over-sized heads are carved and painted with blue faces. (Indonesian, Balinese) The term for puppetry, wayang, comes from the Indonesian word for shadow bayang. Wayang kulit, shadow puppetry using figures made from water buffalo hide, is considered to be the oldest freestanding puppet form; the earliest references to it date from the 800s.
