Matilde Poulat Silver Amethyst Turquoise Parure - Item/Description: Magnificent signed MATL Matilde Poulat Taxco Mexico demi-parure. Bejeweled large sterling silver bib choker necklace and matching clip earrings. Hand crafted from Sterling Silver and hand-set with purple amethyst stones in rectangular and sugar loaf shapes and accented with rectangular bright blue turquoise stones. The workmanship and design is unparalleled. The bib necklace is crafted in Egyptian Revival style. Majestic and regal. Push-in, hidden clasp. Safety chain. Hallmarked: Mexico 925 MS-12 MATL. The matching earrings have hinged clip backs. Hallmarked: Matl Mexico 925. Matilde Eugenia Poulat introduced MATL in 1934. As a young woman, Matilde Poulat studied painting at the renowned San Carlos academy of fine arts in Mexico City and went on to teach painting at an art school until her interest turned exclusively to silver. Poulat's designs for jewelry and religious figures incorporated the Mexican aesthetic. Matilde Poulat received international recognition for her jewelry when she was asked in 1941 to participate in an exhibit of Latin American silver at the pan American union in Washington, D.C. Since her death in 1960, her designs and techniques have been carried on by her nephew, Ricardo Salas.
