Great Nimba Mask, Guinea - Item/Description: Carved wood Nimba shoulder mask (not hollowed), Atlantic Coast, Guinea. The figure, with bird-like features, represents the goddess of maternity. Although it encapsulates the idea of a fertile woman, it is invoked both for the fertility of the fields and for that of women. Used in rituals held before the rice crop is harvested. Used in dance with full raffia cloak. Baga People, Guinea. The 50,000 Baga inhabit the swampy coastal lagoon region of Guinea. The environment is difficult for human survival, but is a fertile one.
