Bidspirit auction | Mid-Century French School Impasto Oil

Mid-Century French School Impasto Oil on Canvas Street Scene - This oil on canvas painting depicts a narrow French street scene, characterized by a blue-fronted storefront with the text ACERE above the display window and an adjacent arched entryway labeled MARCHE DES PATAPHES. The composition is rendered in a post-impressionist style utilizing a heavy impasto technique, where thick layers of paint create a textured, three-dimensional surface, particularly visible in the light-colored masonry and cobblestones. The palette centers on deep blues, ochre, and earthy browns. The work is presented in a multi-tiered gilt wood and gesso frame featuring foliate corner accents, a beaded inner border, and a dark-stained outer molding. The verso reveals the canvas is secured to a wooden stretcher with metal staples. The stretcher is nested within a wooden frame liner, which is then set into the primary outer frame. The back of the canvas is marked with the letter B and the characters Am 8 in red pigment. The bottom member of the stretcher bears the inscription Am 8 - 25 in black, and the vertical members are stamped with the number 10. The right side of the wooden liner is marked with 650 x 9 in black. A wire hanging assembly is attached to the verso. No artist signature is visible on the face of the painting.Height: 18.5 inchesWidth: 15.5 inches.
