A pair of woven bamboo and red lacquer lidded baskets, 20th century - A pair of woven bamboo baskets featuring a dark reddish-brown translucent lacquer finish. Each basket is constructed with a bulbous midsection utilizing a complex openwork star weave, reinforced by broad vertical bamboo ribs that extend to form the structural framework of the body. The baskets taper to a squared neck and a corresponding squared base. Each piece is fitted with a domed, woven lid topped by a small square finial. A tall, fixed overhead bamboo handle is attached to the body by metal rivets. The handles terminate in decorative carved wooden elements shaped as stylized bird heads, which project outward from the sides of the neck. The interior and exterior surfaces are treated with a consistent dark red lacquer that highlights the texture of the weave.Width: 6 inches at the widest point.Height: 11.5 inches to the top of the handle.
