Large Hand Carved and Painted Wooden Cigar Store Indian Statue - NOT AVAILABLE FOR SHIPPING, PICK UP OR TRANSPORT ONLY - A large-scale, hand-carved wooden folk art sculpture of a Native American figure, traditionally referred to as a cigar store Indian. The figure is carved from a solid log and stands on an integrated cylindrical base. The base features the word CIGARS carved in relief and painted red (photo 5). The figure is depicted with arms crossed, wearing a Plains-style feathered headdress painted in alternating red, green, and blue hues. The face is carved with prominent features and wrinkles, with black-painted hair in two long braids tied with red bands. The attire consists of a blue tunic with a textured rectangular breastplate, a white fringed buckskin-style over-garment, a blue lower tunic, and black trousers with red stripes along the outer seams. The figure wears cross-hatched brown footwear. The back of the sculpture is carved with simplified forms, including a yellow-painted cape or garment (photo 7). The underside of the base shows the natural wood grain and evidence of the original log structure (photo 11).
