Appleby Ninth-Plate Daguerreotype Portrait of a Woman in a Thermoplastic Union Case - This mid-19th century ninth-plate daguerreotype features a portrait of a seated woman wearing a ruffled lace collar and a tiered necklace with a circular pendant. The photograph is housed in a black thermoplastic Union Case that displays a relief-molded scroll and floral motif on both the front and back covers. The interior features a green velvet pad with an embossed central floral medallion on the left side. The image itself is framed by a decorative gilt brass mat with an oval opening. The brass mat is stamped vertically on the left side with the maker mark APPLEBY, identifying the work of daguerreotypist R. B. Appleby. The case is constructed with two metal hinges and a side pressure latch. Closed case: 3 inches x 2 1/2 inches x 3/4 inches.
