Paul Sawyier, Autumn Serenity, Watercolor and Gouache on Paper - Paul Sawyier (American, 1865-1917). Autumn Serenity. This atmospheric Tonalist river landscape is executed in watercolor with gouache highlights on paper. The composition depicts a misty waterway at sunrise or sunset, featuring a pale yellow sun hanging low over a densely wooded bank with a small cottage, set against a background of hazy cliffs. The work is signed in the lower right Paul Sawyier with a partially illegible date below. The painting is presented in a double mat with a gold-tone bevel within a molded wood frame with a matching gilt inner edge. The verso is sealed with brown paper and fitted with a hanging wire. No auction or gallery labels are present on the reverse. 19 1/8 x 27 1/4 inches.
