American Rosewood Melodeon, c. 1860-70 - Origin: American Date: Circa 1860-1870 Period/Style: Victorian, Rococo Revival taste Materials: Rosewood and rosewood veneer, wood construction, light and dark key coverings, metal fittings and pedal linkage Form: Melodeon or small reed organ Description: A compact American melodeon in a figured rosewood case, with a hinged keyboard cover and pierced scrolling music rest flanked by circular fretwork panels. The rectangular instrument rests on shaped openwork end supports joined by a sinuous stretcher, their curved profiles reflecting Rococo Revival taste. A central metal pedal and linkage operate the bellows mechanism. The interior is stamped No. 3029, and the case incorporates a worn brass patent plate. Its small scale distinguishes it from larger parlor reed organs. Marks: Interior stamped ”No. 3029”; worn brass patent plate with a May 31 date and partially legible 1860s year. Dimensions: 29.5 in.
