Renaissance Revival Giltwood Pier Mirror - Origin: Probably American Date: Circa 1865-1885 Period/Style: Renaissance Revival Materials: Carved and gilded wood with gesso ornament and mirrored glass Description: Monumental Renaissance Revival pier mirror with a richly articulated architectural frame and a prominent classical female mask at the crest. Pierced scrollwork, palmettes, oval cartouches, and rosettes enrich the projecting cornice above an arched mirror plate. The elongated pilasters carry foliate pendants and ornamental bosses, terminating in substantial carved scroll bases. Incised strapwork and finely delineated foliate details enliven the gilded surface, with contrasting smooth and textured passages emphasizing the depth of the ornament. Horizontal wooden backboards enclose the reverse. Dimensions: 82 in. H, 30.5 in. W, 6.5 in.
