Renaissance Revival Walnut Great Chair - Origin: Continental Europe, probably Italy Date: Circa 1900 Period/Style: Renaissance Revival Materials: Carved walnut, tapestry-style woven upholstery, and brass upholstery tacks Form: High-back great chair Description: A tall Continental Renaissance Revival great chair in carved walnut, its upholstered back framed by spiral-carved rails and surmounted by an elaborate pierced foliate-scroll crest centered by a shield-form cartouche. Long shaped arms terminate in carved handrests above curved supports. The broad upholstered seat rises on cabriole front legs joined by a pierced and carved front stretcher and turned side stretchers. Tapestry-style woven fabric with stylized Asian landscape and geometric motifs covers the seat and back, giving the chair a dramatic architectural silhouette. Dimensions: 57 in. H, 29.5 in. W, 22 in. D; seat height 18 in. Condition: Scattered scratches, abrasions, and finish wear occur throughout, especially on the arms, posts, feet, and carved edges. Several horizontal seams or old repaired joins are visible across the reverse of the crest, together with additional surface scratches. The upholstery has fading, discoloration, pulls, fraying, and losses along the front and lower edges and corners; the brass nailhead trim is worn and irregular in places.
