Seven Gothic Revival Mahogany Gondola Chairs - Origin: Probably American Date: Mid-19th century Period/Style: Gothic Revival Materials: Mahogany, figured mahogany veneers, upholstery Form: Set of seven gondola-form side chairs Description: Seven mahogany side chairs with curved back stiles enclosing broad figured-veneer back rails and shaped vasiform splats. Pierced Gothic crest motifs are framed by scrolled carving above the rails. Bow-front seat frames carry upholstered inset seats, with six covered in green fabric and one retaining exposed foundation material. The front legs sweep outward in a saber profile, echoed by the raked rear supports. The carved crests and figured backs repeat across the group, combining the gondola form with Gothic Revival ornament. Dimensions: 33 in. H, 18 in. W, 16 in. D, each.
