4 Baroque Revival Carved Walnut Chairs - Origin: Probably English Date: Late 19th century Period/Style: Baroque Revival, Carolean taste Materials: Carved walnut with cream-patterned upholstery and metal fasteners Form: Associated group of four high-back chairs, one armchair and three side chairs Description: Four Baroque Revival walnut chairs in the Carolean taste, comprising one armchair and three side chairs. Tall pierced backs combine central rosettes, stylized palmettes and scrolling foliage beneath sculpted crests, framed by turned stiles with finials. Block-and-baluster legs are joined by turned side and rear stretchers and boldly carved, pierced front stretchers. The armchair has sweeping foliate-carved arms ending in large scroll terminals. Back carving and proportions vary within the group. Seats have later cream-patterned upholstery. Dimensions: 56 in. H, 28 in. W, 18 in. D; seat height 20 in.
