Monumental Gilt Mirror with Floral Corners - Date: Probably second half of the 19th century Materials: Gilt-finished wood, applied gesso or composition ornament, glass Form: Monumental horizontal wall mirror Description: A monumental horizontal mirror, 8 ft. 9 in. wide, enclosed by a broad gilt frame with rounded cushion molding and a narrow leaf-molded inner slip. The outer border carries a continuous relief pattern of stylized foliage. Each corner is overlaid with a projecting cluster of roses, smaller flowerheads and leafy stems extending along both adjoining rails. The layered floral ornament overlaps the smooth central molding, with individually modeled petals and leaves in applied gesso or composition over a wood framework. Dimensions: 70.5 in. H, 105 in.
