Mahal-Type Rug - Origin: Persia (Iran), probably Mahal region Date: Probably first half of the 20th century Period/Style: Harshang floral pattern, Mahal type Materials: Wool pile, woven textile foundation Form: Rectangular room-size carpet Description: Persian wool-pile carpet, probably Mahal, dating provisionally to the first half of the 20th century. The salmon-red field carries a bold Harshang arrangement of oversized palmettes, serrated leaves and angular flowering branches around a stepped dark central medallion. Smaller diamonds, rosettes and cream accents fill the spaces between the principal motifs, with dark floral spandrels at the corners. A broad dark border repeats multicolored palmettes within narrow geometric guards. The softened red, blue, green and cream palette is visible across areas of uneven pile. Dimensions: 13 ft. 5 in.
