Large Rococo Revival Gilt Mirror - Date: Probably late 19th century Period/Style: Rococo Revival Materials: Gilt-finished wood, molded gesso or composition ornament, beveled glass Form: Rectangular wall mirror Description: A large rectangular mirror with a beveled plate enclosed by a deeply molded gilt frame. Broad rounded rails are bordered by a narrow foliate inner slip and overlaid with scrolling acanthus, flowerheads and ribbed C-scrolls. Four projecting corner cartouches extend beyond the frame, while open scrollwork and leafy stems articulate the outer edges. Applied gesso or composition ornament overlays the wood framework, combining smooth cushion moldings with densely modeled Rococo Revival relief. Dimensions: 38 in. H, 46 in. W, 5.5 in.
