Victorian Barley-Twist Pedestal Stand - Date: Late 19th century Period/Style: Victorian, with Renaissance Revival influence Materials: Dark-finished hardwood and veneer, probably rosewood, with cast-metal feet Form: Rectangular pedestal stand Description: Late Victorian pedestal stand in dark-finished hardwood and veneer, probably rosewood, with a rectangular molded top above a substantial pierced spiral central column. Smaller barley-twist uprights flank the central shaft, joined near their heads by short turned crossbars and curved brackets supporting the top. Baluster and ring turnings articulate the column ends above a rectangular platform base. Four cast-metal ball-and-claw feet raise the platform, contrasting with the polished wood. The open-twist carving distinguishes this example from stands with solid spiral shafts. Dimensions: 31.75 in. H, 18.5 in. W, 14 in.
