Aesthetic Movement Walnut Writing Desk - Origin: American or English Date: Circa 1880 Period/Style: Aesthetic Movement with Eastlake influence Materials: Walnut and figured walnut veneer, gilt-incised decoration, leather, and brass hardware Form: Writing desk Description: A late Victorian walnut writing desk, the rectangular upper case fitted with a black leather-inset hinged writing surface opening to a fitted well with a broad rear compartment and four smaller divisions. Figured walnut-veneered panels are enriched with gilt-incised lines, scrolls, pendant foliate devices, and geometric knot motifs. A shaped gallery is centered by a molded circular sunburst medallion. The case is raised on ring-turned front standards and shaped rear supports above a serpentine-front lower shelf, with an open pierced folio rack, applied roundels, and pendant finials completing the design.
