Large Carl Thieme Dresden Figural Covered Urn - Maker/Artist: Carl Thieme porcelain factory Origin: Potschappel, Saxony, Germany Date: Circa 1888-1901 Period/Style: Rococo Revival Materials: Hard-paste porcelain, polychrome enamels, and gilding Form: Figural covered urn on separate stand Description: A large Dresden porcelain covered urn on a separate shaped stand, the baluster body molded with pale turquoise and pink rocaille ornament enriched with gilding. Painted reserves depict figures in a garden and floral bouquets, surrounded by applied flowers, fruit, and foliage extending onto the scrolling handles. The pierced cover is surmounted by a classically draped female figure holding a floral garland. A flower-encrusted socle rests on the conforming scalloped stand. Constructed in three separate sections: cover, urn, and stand. Marks: Blue T above crossed lines beneath the base. Dimensions: 31 in. H, 13.5 in. W Documentation: Accompanied by an October 11, 1991 letter from The Dixon Gallery and Gardens identifying the piece as Carl Thieme factory porcelain, circa 1888-1901. The letter concerns a proposed donation that the museum declined because of its condition and anticipated conservation costs.
