Chinese-Style Silvered Copper Dragon Jian Sword - Origin: China or Sino-Tibetan region Date: 20th century Period/Style: Traditional Chinese / Himalayan Materials: Steel, silvered copper alloy, wood, and colored stone or glass cabochons Form: Straight double-edged jian sword with scabbard Description: A Chinese-style straight double-edged jian sword fitted with an ornate silvered copper-alloy hilt and matching scabbard. The scabbard is worked in relief with a sinuous dragon among clouds and embellished with orange-red and turquoise-colored cabochons, mask-form suspension mounts, and loose rings. The shaped guard incorporates a highly stylized animal mask, while the grip is engraved with floral ornament. One face of the steel blade bears an incised dragon, and the other has a four-character inscription apparently reading Qianlong nian zhi, or Made during the Qianlong reign. The inscription is considered apocryphal and does not establish an eighteenth-century date. Dimensions: 39 in. L, 5 in. W.
