German Rosewood and Gilt Bronze Clock - Origin: Germany Date: Circa 1890-1900 Period/Style: Historicism and Baroque Revival Maker: Unidentified Materials: Rosewood veneer, gilt bronze, brass, glass, steel, and fabric Form: Bracket-form mantel clock Description: A German bracket-form mantel clock in rosewood veneer with gilt-bronze mounts, its stepped architectural case surmounted by a central flame finial and four smaller corner finials. Applied floral garlands, figural caryatid terms, pierced corner mounts, and paw feet enrich the facade. The arched dial has a silvered Roman numeral chapter ring, gilt center, blued hands, and a subsidiary slow-fast regulator. Pierced side and rear frets are backed in fabric. The brass movement strikes on a coiled gong. Marks: Regulator dial marked ”MADE IN GERMANY.” No maker's mark observed on the movement. Dimensions: 17 in. H, 9.5 in. W, 7.5 in. The dial has surface marks, oxidation, and scattered losses to the silvered finish. The fabric behind the side frets is faded and frayed. The movement, strike, accuracy, and duration were not tested. A winding key is included. Mechanical service should be anticipated.
