French Crystal Regulator and Carriage Clock - Origin: France Date: Circa 1900 Period/Style: Belle Epoque Maker: Unidentified Materials: Brass, beveled glass, enamel, steel, and mercury pendulum Form: Crystal regulator mantel clock and carriage clock Description: A group of two French brass and beveled-glass clocks, comprising a four-glass crystal regulator mantel clock and a smaller carriage clock. The regulator has a white enamel dial with stylized Arabic numerals, twin winding apertures, a gong-striking movement, and a four-vial mercury-compensated pendulum. The carriage clock has a swing handle, Roman numeral enamel dial, blued hands, top viewing panel, platform escapement, and gong-striking movement. Both cases reveal their mechanisms through beveled glass panels. Marks: Larger movement stamped ”MADE IN FRANCE” and with numerals including ”111” and ”4.1.” Smaller platform escapement marked ”S” and ”F.” No maker's mark observed. Dimensions: Larger 9.25 in. The glass panels have dust, smudges, and scattered surface marks. The enamel dials have minor wear and soiling, including around the winding apertures of the larger clock. The movements and gong assemblies appear substantially complete, but running, striking, accuracy, and duration were not tested. The mercury pendulum vials appear intact. Winding keys accompany the clocks. Mechanical service should be anticipated.
