Continental Silvered-Bronze Figural Fender - Origin: Continental Europe, probably French Date: Circa 1880-1900 Period/Style: Renaissance Revival and Beaux-Arts Maker: Unidentified Materials: Silvered bronze, metal supports, and black stone plinths Form: Monumental bowed fireplace fender or kerb Description: An elaborate late nineteenth-century silvered-bronze fireplace fender of sweeping bowed form. The architectural end pedestals are surmounted by shell-crested backs and seated bow-bearing putti, accompanied by smaller attendants and hunting hounds. Pierced foliate scrollwork extends across the center, framing a trophy-form finial surmounted by a spread-winged eagle. The molded lower rail is richly ornamented with floral bands, grotesque and lion masks, suspended rings, and projecting scroll feet. Raised on rectangular black stone plinths. Condition: Overall intact with scattered tarnish, oxidation, scratches, surface residue, and extensive rubbing and loss to the silvered finish, exposing warmer bronze tones. Numerous separately cast decorative elements exhibit minor bends, looseness, and irregular alignment. Several slender arrows or rods appear bent. Scattered small nicks and edge wear are present throughout. Black stone plinths have scratches and minor edge abrasions. No major structural break is apparent.
